What is DeskCharm? A Technical & Design Look at macOS Desktop Physics Charms
An in-depth technical overview of DeskCharm—how zero-CPU Swift Verlet physics, click passthrough, and custom desktop charms work on macOS.

macOS Design Studio
DeskCharm was created out of a desire for software that feels tangible. In a world of flat static UI screens, DeskCharm brings physical weight, gravity, and micro-delight back to your Mac desktop.
The Technical Challenge: Click-Passthrough Overlay
Creating a floating overlay app on macOS often risks blocking background apps from receiving mouse clicks. DeskCharm solves this with a specialized dual-tier passthrough engine built in native Swift.
The main overlay window covers the display space, but ignores mouse events across 99.9% of its bounds. Selective hit-testing ensures trackpad scrolling, clicks, and drags in Safari, Xcode, Figma, or Chrome pass directly to background apps with zero latency.
Verlet Rope Physics & Harmonic Oscillators
Instead of rigid animations, DeskCharm calculates physical movement in real-time:
- Segmented Rope Simulation: The hanging cord is modeled as an 8-segment Verlet rope with Catmull-Rom spline curves.
- Damped Harmonic Oscillations: The charm sags naturally under gravity, responds to cursor flicks with true angular momentum, and settles with smooth natural damping.
- Multi-Oscillator Charms: Special charms like the Indian Nimbu-Mirchi feature 7 green chilies that whip and jiggle independently.
Efficiency & Battery Impact
Built with pure Swift and SwiftUI CoreAnimation frameworks, DeskCharm consumes under 0.01% idle CPU. When the charm comes to rest, physics calculation pauses automatically, ensuring zero MacBook battery drain.
